There's a young Cuban drummer called Dafnis Prieto drumming up a storm in NYC. From what I hear, this guy is the new "latin jazz" kid on the block ! Anyone on HOD know this guy ?

Dafnis plays with the Caribbean Jazz Project and played on their last couple CD's(I recommend them highly!) He's been burnin' it up in NYC for at least a few years. He was in Modern Drummer a couple years back in an article about 3 up-and coming Cuba drummers. This guy is monstrous. And I'm happy to report he doesn't play left foot clave(or at least doesn't choose to)!
I saw his band play in NYC several months ago at the Zinc Bar- I was dying to see this guy. After the 1st set, Cliff Almond looks at me and says: "Well, that was frightening!"

We talked about him a good ways back in a few topics here at HB. Maybe a couple of the "underrated" ones AW...Don't know if a search will bring it up after this time.

Because of Hass, I went out and got John Benitez' Descarga in NY. Hass and Benitez are like the dynamic duo, but when he was out of town, Benitez called Dafnis.
Dafnis is SICK! total command of the instrument. Way too busy for my tastes, although in his case the groove never suffers.
He's a bad boy. He also plays in Steve Colemans band.

The first time I've seen Dafnis was in December 1999 when I was in NYC for some days. Dafnis has arrived in NYC just some weeks before. EVERYBODY was talking about him. What a great feel, touch and knowledge of the instrument. Last time I've seen him was with the Caribbean Jazz Project here in Germany. He played a 22" Kick, a Snare and instead of a Rack Tom and a Floor Tom he used two Timbales mounted there. Great combination!!

Were both timbales on the kick drum? Or separated where the toms normally would be?

@cjbdrm
The Timbales were seperated and mounted where the first rack Tom and the floor Tom should be.
